Sand and light

Infomation
Sandpainting is the art of pouring colored sands, powdered pigments from minerals or crystals, and pigments from other natural or synthetic sources onto a surface to make a fixed, or unfixed sand painting. Unfixed sand paintings have a long established cultural history in numerous social groupings around the globe, and are often temporary, ritual paintings prepared for religious or healing ceremonies. It is also referred to as dry painting.

Story Telling Through Sand Drawing

Marcus Winter is an indegenious artist of New Zealand, and is the only "performance painter" of his kind in Australasia and the Pacific. The following is his live art performance using Sand Art. Marcus tells the Māori creation story of the world being formed by the violent separation of Ranginui, the Sky Father, and Papatuanuku, the Earth Mother, by their children.

Reflection
I become so mesmerized by the movement of the artists body and how they interact with the sand and how the sand response to every touch so precisely. The artists are so familiar with how their body works with and against the sand, how it travels through their fingers and how they manipulate the shapes of the sand to create such dynamic images. What is so enjoyable about watching Sand Painting is seeing the images change and disappear so fluently, almost like watching live film overlap itself.
